I, TONYA GLOBAL RELEASE CAUSES MAJOR CONFUSION

MEXICO CITY – A  number of Spanish-language markets are having a hard time coping with the phonetics of new film I, Tonya.

I, Tonya stars Margot Robbie as Tonya Harding, a figure skater who combined some of the qualities of a mafia hit man. However, Spanish language markets are finding the movie difficult to market on account of its title.

“I thought for sure it would have, like, America Ferrera or something,” lamented Maria Gonzales, of Mexico City.

Miss Gonzales is not the only confused cinema-goer. Why? The answer is in the title.

“What we’re finding is that many Spanish speakers think this film is actually called, ‘Aye, Tonya!’ … and they assume it’s a new Telenovela brought to the big screen,” says an executive with Neon, the company that distributes the film.

Too late to change the title for certain markets, many audiences are leaving confused by the film.

“Who ice skates in South America?” asked one moviegoer.

And, another retorted, “Just more white girl stuff; not a single Latina in this whole movie!”

Regardless, the film – about famed figure skater Tonya Harding – is getting major awards buzz.

I, TONYA is currently in theatres.
