HOLLYWOOD – James Franco’s father reveals the secret of his youth.
The family resemblance is obvious but what many people don’t know is that Dave Franco is actually James Franco’s father! Dave Franco – who is also an actor starring in such films as 21 Jump Street and Nerve – spoke EXCLUSIVELY about his relationship with his son.
Many people think we’re brothers and I take that as a real compliment but the truth will out.
But you actually look younger than James.
I wouldn’t want to say anything about James’ lifestyle choices, not to the press anyhow. But all I can say for myself is lots of grapefruit juice and Pilates.
So that’s your secret?
It’s no secret, but that’s what I do.
And the acting is a family tradition.
I saw James do Spider-man 2 and I just thought, he’s great and it looks so easy. Why don’t you move over and let your old man take a shot? We have a rivalry and James will often retreat to his room sobbing. He was in there for weeks after Pineapple Express. But we also give each other advice and help each other out.
What does his mother think of all this?
She’s super-psyched. In fact she’s got into things too, but she’s using her maiden name. Including Spanish fascists, way too many Francos!
What’s her name?
But she’s really young. She can’t possibly be…
Now I can’t give away her secrets, but carrot juice and yoga.
Nerve is in theaters now.
HOLLYWOOD – Gladiator and Walk the Line star Joaquin Phoenix is to play Jesus in Garth Davis’ Mary Magdalene and he will be employed his notorious method.
He was an emperor of Ancient Rome; a country singer in Walk the Line and a burn out in I’m Still Here, now Joaquin Phoenix will play Jesus Christ in a new film Mary Magdalene, starring Rooney Mara in the titular role. The normally reclusive Phoenix spoke EXCLUSIVELY to the Studio Exec:
I love the idea of playing Jesus Christ. If you watch The Master you can see how interested I am in people inventing religions and Jesus Christ has to be in the top three of that game.
How will you approach the role?
Oh I’m going full method for this man. I know there are so many people out there who would be upset if I did anything less. Jesus is a very real part of millions of people’s lives and so I will give them the most authentic portrayal of Jesus ever put on the screen. I’ve already begun.
How do you mean?
Last night, I went to this party and I totally brought the wine.
I’ve been spending a lot of time in the desert. Not exactly forty days and forty nights, but I’m working up to it. I’ve been antagonizing the Italian community and the Jewish elders with some pretty radical online posts on my blog ‘I’m Back’.
Oh that’s you.
Yep. I’ve got a girl who comes round to my house and gives me a whipping every week. I’m hanging out with a bunch of dudes. Casey Affleck, Russell Crowe, all those guys, twelve of them. I’ve been forgiving adulterous women left right and center. And I’m going to get myself killed and then revived after a biblical accurate interval.
Whoa! How are you going to do that?
There’s this company in Mexico.
The film’s production company See-Saw Films, which is teaming with Universal Pictures Intl. Iain Canning and Emile Sherman are producing along with Film4, from a script by Helen Edmundson and Philippa Goslett.
Mary Magdalene will be released in 2017.
HOLLYWOOD – David Fincher will direct a new film based on the Gamer Gate ‘scandal’ set to star Stephen Baldwin and Rooney Mara from a screenplay by David Mamet.
The Social Network director said that the film would be ‘a kind of sequel’ to The Social Network:
In The Social Network we looked at the troubled lonely male who finds a way to power. Although he invents a social networking site, he himself is socially inept. In fact that’s basically why he does it. Roll on to the world of gaming and what you have is those same males, lonely and fearful of women and they see their world increasingly infringed on by girls and this leads to a virulent hatred and misogyny and bullying.
But what about the issue of journalistic ethics in the gaming community?
Oh that was complete nonsense from the get go. A guy had a hot girlfriend who was a programmer and they broke up and he blogged all their shit. It was low level revenge porn, without the porn. And most of it was inaccurate and has since been corrected. But what I’m interested in is the misogyny that then ensued with women being harassed and threatened with cyber bullying and actual violence. I’m casting Rooney because she is the girl who instigates The Social Network, and I got to thinking she doesn’t have much agency in that film. What if she became a hot shot game designer, and her male competitors couldn’t handle it.
Gamer Gate will be released in 2016.
HOLLYWOOD – Channing Tatum star and upcoming director has been talking up the Magic Mike sequel due for release in the Summer of 2015 and revealed an important plot point.
The 22 Jump Street star revealed the original premise to the Studio Exec exclusively yesterday:
We went quite far with the world of male stripping and it was a world I knew about and Steven was really interested in. And that worked for the first film. But I began to think early on in the process for doing the sequel, why don’t we flip it? What about a bit of a reversal? I mean, can you imagine what it would be like if it was a woman who took of her clothes for money and not a man? Yeah, you see. I just blew your mind.
I know, right? I mean men taking off their clothes, we’ve seen that. We know what that’s about. Men stripping for girls and women, or for other men. It’s familiar. But a woman, by which I mean a lady, taking of her clothes that’s… transgressive.
So the story?
Mike’s sister (Rooney Mara) – who’s always been a bit judgmental of the whole stripping thing – she is a bit down on her look and she meet Michelle Rodriguez, a wild child, who introduces her to the shadowy depths of ‘female’ strip clubs. It’s going to be pretty far out.
Aren’t you worried about classification?
The last thing we want to do is anything tasteless. We know how much the culture can take and where the line is drawn. I think the whole of the Hollywood establishment would revolt and lynch us if they believed even for a second that we were showing female flesh excessively or purely for titillation. And they’d be right. After all those are our sisters, our mothers, our daughters man.
Isn’t there a risk that other, seedier directors might exploit this new idea?
There is always that risk but I would actually then rely on the moral probity of everyone in this industry to act as a kind of safe fail device, protecting the public from the objectification of women. Something that has so far never happened and I would hope will never happen, either in this film or in any films to come.
Magic Michelle will be released July 4, 2015.
