HOLLYWOOD – Melissa McCarthy is to take over as Roseanne Connor following the firing of Roseanne Barr.
Season two of the groundbreaking sitcom Roseanne will star Melissa McCarthy in the role of the Roseanne Connor, the working mother who keeps her blue collar family together with her sharp witty tongue.John Goodman is on board to play her husband Dan.
McCarthy had this to say about the project:
I’ve always been a huge fan of Roseanne Barr. For me she was a hero and a role model. She broke a lot of ground as a comedian for women and when ABC came to me with the idea I thought it sounded amazing. I agreed straight away.
How will your approach differ?
I’m not going to take Ambien. That’s for starters. I think my version is going to be less angry and bitter. She’s going to spend less time on Twitter and more time investigating paranormal activity. In order to lighten the mood a little, I’ve also introduced a concept I’d like to call ‘Ghostbusting’.
Having lost her job, Dan and I start up a new business where they investigate and capture paranormal activity and amusing CGI apparitions.
Absolutely amazing. I know, right?
Roseanne returns to ABC in 2021.
Hidden Gems brings to light little known film gems which have somehow slipped through the collective cinematic consciousness. You’re welcome.
If there’s something strange in your neighborhood, who you gonna call? Ghostbusters.
Everybody loves Ghostbusters.
Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones starred in the iconic 2016 supernatural comedy, packed with thrills and chills. But did you know that the movie is actually a ‘remake’?
No? Don’t sweat it nobody does.
Released in 1984, the original Ghostbusters starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as three paranormal investigators. They enter the private sector as ‘ghostbusters’ and Sigourney Weaver is a client who finds herself possessed by an ancient deity.
Although the special effects are very dated and the acting doesn’t stand comparison, the film does has a certain 80s charm. This is mostly due to Rick Moranis, an actor who bestrode the decade like a comic colossus. And then mysteriously disappeared to dedicate his life to being Canadian full-time.
Nowadays, it is very difficult to watch without making comparisons with the later definitive version, but the caper has more than a curiosity value. It is worth rediscovering as a ‘hidden gem’.
HOLLYWOOD – The Studio Exec sends in the FACT squad to run the Voight-Kampff test on the new Blade Runner 2049.
Denis Villeneuve’s follow up to Ridley Scott’s sci-fi classic Blade Runner 2049 has been shrouded in mystery but the Studio Exec FACT squad has been on the job – though one of them got fried running through an electric field. So here are the 5 FACTS they uncovered.
One. The whole of Blade Runner 2049 takes place at eleven minutes to nine PM.
Two. Following his success in LaLa Land, Ryan Gosling will sing the theme song ‘Tears in Rain’ over the opening titles as well as the song ‘Is this to test whether I’m a Replicant (or a lesbian)?’ also known as Blade Runner Love Theme.
Three. The cast for Blade Runner 2049 includes Harrison Ford from the original, as well as Jared Leto, David Letterman, Jack Black, Will Ferrell, Ellen DeGeneres, Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne ‘the Rock’ Johnson and Melissa McCarthy.
Four. Although not directing the film, Ridley Scott has been part of the creative team though scriptwriter Hampton Fancher has said that his contribution consisted solely of demanding ‘a shit load of unicorns.’ This demand has been fully satisfied. Hampton told the Exec: ‘You’ve never seen this many unicorns on film at the same time.’
Five. Whereas in the original there was an ambiguity as to which character was a replicant, in the new film the Canadian director Denis Villeneuve has insisted that there will be a more radical ambiguity. ‘We will suggest that not only are ALL the characters replicants, but also the audience and the filmmakers. Everybody and everything is artificial. Philip K. Dick, I feel would have approved.’
HOLLYWOOD – Melissa McCarthy is to star in a remake of the late 80s early 90s sitcom Roseanne for Netflix.
The new Netflix version of Roseanne Barr’s groundbreaking sitcom Roseanne will star Melissa McCarthy in the role of the Roseanne Connor, the working mother who keeps her blue collar family together with her sharp witty tongue. Kevin James is on board to play her husband Dan.
McCarthy had this to say about the project:
I’ve always been a huge fan of Roseanne Barr. For me she was a hero and a role model. She broke a lot of ground as a comedian for women and when Netflix came to me with the idea I thought it sounded amazing. I agreed straight away.
Will the show be updated?
Absolutely. The original Roseanne was very much of its time. It was a show that spoke to the Clinton years really. Aspirational and working class. There was an optimism despite all the hardship and hard times. Nowadays, things have changed. We have a Trump presidency to look forward to and I think my Roseanne is going to be angrier and more bitter. She’s going to spend a lot of time on Twitter rants and working out why the bank are foreclosing on her house. In order to lighten the mood a little, I’ve also introduced a concept I’d like to call ‘Ghostbusting’.
Having lost her job, Dan and Roseanne start up a new business where they investigate and capture paranormal activity and amusing CGI apparitions.
Absolutely amazing. I know, right?
The Netflix original series will drop twenty episodes some time early in 2017.
HOLLYWOOD – Melissa McCarthy is to star in the new ‘sequel reboot’ of the Rocketeer, the studio announced today.
Star of Ghostbusters, The Boss and Spy, Melissa McCarthy is now to star in the new version of The Rocketeer. It will be a follow up to the 1991 Disney movie starring Billy Campbell. McCarthy is to play Cliffette Secord, in a twist from the original 1980s comic book. Tentatively titled “The Rocketeers,” the film has been classified as a ‘sequel reboot’ and is set some years after the activities of the first film.
Cliff Secord has vanished while on a mission to fight the Nazis. His sister Cliffette (McCarthy) has taken over the job of Rocketeer to prevent a corrupt scientist from selling the technology to the Soviets.
The film will represent Melissa McCarthy’s move away from comedy into straight drama. She spoke EXCLUSIVELY to the Studio Exec about the film:
What attracted me tot he script was how political the story is. Although it is obviously set in a different period, the concerns of technology being used to create terrible destruction resonated even today. Of course there have to be some light shades and those will be provided by a new character called Otis, the comedy Kangaroo. He’s a kind of genetic experiment.
Timothy Dalton is to return as Pieter Sinclair, the evil twin brother of Neville Sinclair the role he played in the original movie.
The Rocketeers will be released in 2017.
HOLLYWOOD – It was revealed today that people with vaginas can also be funny.
The release of the female led Ghostbusters reboot has taken everyone by surprise. The new film starring Kate McKinnon, Leslie Jones, Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy has been warmly received, despite a bunch of dicks trying to do down its IMDb score, because they’re … well … dicks.
Industry analyst Xavier Poulis told the Studio Exec:
This idea that people with vaginas can be funny is not actually a new thing. In the past we had some great film comediennes like Madeline Kahn, Bernadette Peters, Diane Keaton and Goldie Hawn to name but four. However, there has always been a prevailing idea in the big studios that men are funnier than women and that’s what the public want to see. But now with Tina Fey, Sarah Silverman, Amy Poehler, Amy Schumer and Melissa McCarthy consistently bringing in high end critical and commercial successes to the big screen. There needs to be a rethink.
Where does this leave people with penises?
Also we have to look at the other side of the ledger. People with penises. Penii. Okay those. Adam Sandler, Kevin Hart, Kevin James, increasingly Will Ferrell and Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Robert deNiro, James Franco, Seth Rogen… maybe it’s time to consider the idea that people with penises aren’t so equipped for comedy. Especially since the frat boy idea of gross out comedy took the ascendancy and became essentially the only comedy we see these days.
Ghostbusters is in theaters.
HOLLYWOOD – A bunch of men who are furious at the all female remake of beloved mediochre comedy Ghostbusters have started weeping, it was revealed today.
As the day draws close that will see the release of the Ghostbusters remake starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, men very angry have started to go to the bathroom to have little cries.
Ted Nungent told the Studio Exec EXCLUSIVELY:
It’s not fair. They ruin everything, with their dresses and periods. It’ll probably end up being like some kind of tea party. I know that if I catch myself having a few sniffles it isn’t my fault. So sometimes I just go somewhere quiet all by myself and bawl my eyes out.
Stephen Baldwin was also furious, but frustrated as to where he put his anger his voice broke into a tremulous whisper and he blinked away the streaming tears:
Ghostbusters for most men of my generation was our Vietnam. And to remake it with ovaries and vulvas and useful nipples… it’s like you’re spitting on the memory of all those men who died making Ghostbusters and Ghsotbusters 2.
Dan Aykroyd, who starred in the original film, said that he sympathized with the reactions of some men.
I’ve seen the movie and I know it is really good, but I understand how meaningful Ghostbusters is to many men and anyway we all need to cry. I remember when we made Dragnet – I cried all year. I was dehydrated I cried so much.
Ghostbusters will be released in July.
HOLLYWOOD – The new Ghostbusters movie got its first trailer this week and the internet did a back flip and two treble double nelsons in delight.
The Studio Exec watched the new Ghostbusters remake with some trepidation and was ready to find all the Easter eggs and other goodies hidden in Paul Feig’s take on the classic 80’s paranormal comedy starring Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. We discovered the secret Easter Eggs and here they are. All five of them.
- The Ghostbusters are WOMEN! This is unbelievable. I mean… women! Talk about crossing the Goddamned streams. Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy’s particle physicists join with Kate McKinnon and Leslie Jones, the latter is not well educated but brings sass because she is ‘black’.
- There are no men Ghostbusters, but just women. Thor is a nerdy janitor!
- The women Ghostbusters get puked on by the Slimer, just to show that women can do the same sort of brain dead comedy gunk as the men.
- They drive an extremely similar car; the black actor is still the only non-scientist and graffiti is used to consign some sort of ‘street’ legitimacy to the whole proceeding. And I know this is not strictly legitimate and we haven’t seen enough to properly judge, but good Christ it really does look like comedy by committee and as funny as a very small coffin. These are talented people who are very creative and I’m sure that the film is going to be wonderful, but I do wish they were making their own film, their own idea, which would then be rebooted twenty years from now.
- There are no Easter Eggs. Easter Eggs are made of chocolate and there is often a gift or something inside. I watched the trailer three times and I’ll be buggered with a rusty rod if I found even one.
HOLLYWOOD – The first poster for Martin Scorsese’s all female Goodfellas was released EXCLUSIVELY to the Studio Exec today, along with the title: GoodBroads.
The news that there would be an all female Goodfellas came through only yesterday, inspired by the wisdom of the New York Post film ‘critic’ Kyle Smith, who claimed that women ‘don’t get Goodfellas’ based on his extensive (and potentially fictional) girlfriend. The poster shows the principal cast members – Jessica Chastain as Henrietta Hill, Meryl Streep in the role of Jemima ‘the Lady’ Conway and comedienne Melissa McCarthy as Tammy DeVito, the role made iconic by Joe Pesci.
Martin Scorsese hand delivered the new poster to the Studio Exec bungalow and had this to say:
Everyone here is very excited about this revisiting of a classic film, but from a new angle. We have a very talented cast and I already have the original cast members signed up to to do cameos. Ray Liotta will play Henrietta’s father, Robert de Niro will appear briefly as Goombah and Joe Pesci will play Tammy’s father, in a role that was played in the original by my mother.
GoodBroads will be released in 2017.

In the sixth of our series Thinking Comedy, film comic Melissa McCarthy talks about comedy and instinct.
I suppose I’ve always been a very instinctive comedian. When I worked on the Gilmore Girls our director would occasionally go through a scene and look for the jokes. I didn’t really like that.
If I have a character and the character is funny then the jokes organically emerge from that reality. In this sense, I’m a very Nietzschean comedian. I suspect the rational and go for a more Dionysian freaky angle. Bridesmaids – the scene where we’re all throwing up and shitting – thinking that through it isn’t probably what you would want to show on screen. But that gross out moment speaks to the animal within us, the wildness which lurks beneath the veneer of civilisation with which we coat ourselves. Ultimately, we laugh because it is what we secretly want and yet cannot admit.
Take the Jason Bateman comedy Identity Thief. Many people told me that the film was probably not going to work. The script was weak and we were always going to have to work towards the gags. Jason is – unlike me – very thoughtful and rational when it comes to the work. So he was always saying ‘This is awful, this is going to be an absolute disaster.’ I was far more relaxed. ‘Yes,’ I told him. ‘It might well turn out as funny as a Chinese mining disaster. But at least we’ll have fun.’ And I went for it. As it turned out, there was a Chinese mining disaster coinciding with the release date and I think even the film’s harshest critics would be pushed to find the mining disaster ‘funnier’.
With Tammy we decided to root everything in the character and for me it works. My hope is not only that people will be entertained but they’ll feel the beast within them stir.
Jason Bateman ‘comedy’ Identity Thief lands in theaters on February 8th and ironically, the film’s TV spots have left many confused regarding the identity of his co-star, which according to the trailer is Bridesmaids funny woman Melissa McCarthy. Today Universal Pictures PR puppet Ruben Headlore confirmed everyone’s suspicions and stated that yes, the role of Diana is indeed played by country star, Reba McEntire.
“We apologize for the mix up, we’re investigating how this happened to prevent any future incidents,” mumbled Headlore. “We have edited our trailers and TV spots with the correct casting credits and we will be rolling those out this week.”
We caught up with McEntire at TSC in North Hollywood: “I went to them boys an’ asked ’em ‘How can y’all let this mess happen?’ Now she’s tryin’ to say I’m stealin’ her goshdarn identity!” The Grammy award winning singer said this is the start of a ‘serious’ acting career. Her longest acting stint was on TV’s Reba which lasted six seasons. She’s mostly known for her big screen role in the 1990 film Tremors, and she revealed she will be returning for a reboot of the franchise. “They’re writin’ the script. Got Kevin Bacon on board … he figures he’ll have the time, everyone loves The Followin’ so if history is any indication FOX will cancel it pretty soon.” Michael Gross – being kept alive by Schwarzenegger and funded Skynet robotics – will reprise his role as Burt Gummer. There is currently no director attached to the project, the hope is the film is released by 2015.
We tried to get in contact with Melissa McCarthy for comment, we were told she was on a trip to Nashville.
