DAVID LYNCH CHUCKIE EGG MOVIE GREENLIT

Breaking News – Hot on the tails of the Super Mario Bros movie announcement, it has been confirmed that a David Lynch Chuckie Egg movie is in development. The David Lynch Chuckie Egg movie will be based on the smash hit 80s computer game of the same name. The Exec caught up with Lynch to discuss his new project.

[Cough] David, do you have to smoke in here during the interview?

Yes.

… Ok then. Can You Tell Us What Drew You To Such A Different Kind Of Project?

Well, it’s like this. People know me for making films that don’t necessarily have linear narratives, bourgeois constructs or easy to follow plots, if any. I’m an artist that seeks constant reinvention and stimulus. Therefore I was very stimulated when Paramount drove a truck full of money up to my home and told me to look at their script for Chuckie Egg: The Movie. I thought to myself, ‘David, it’s time for reinvention. Oh, and a new swimming pool. Ya can’t forget the swimming pool.’

So This Isn’t Going To Be A Subversive Take On The Computer Game Movie Genre?

Fuck, no! As I said, I have reinvented myself. I’m gonna be the darling of the studios. You think Ron Howard is a safe, 7/10 kinda director? You aint seen nothing yet. I’m gonna direct this shit by the numbers. I’ve already been on to McDonalds about a Chuckie Egg McMuffin tie in. This will be the blandest movie I ever made.

Is It Live Action Or CGI?

It’s whatever the fuck the producers tell me it’s gonna be. We haven’t had the initial feedback data from the focus groups yet, so we really can’t say at this stage. But I guarantee you this, Mr Chuckie will have his eggs and eat them.

Had You Ever Heard Of Chuckie Egg Before You Read The Script?

Script? Have you seen the script? If you do, then please forward me a copy. I’ve heard it’s great. But to answer your question, no. I never played video games in the 80s. I was too busy making Dune, Blue Velvet and Twin Peaks. What were you doing?

KYLE MACLACHLAN TO STAR IN SHOWGIRLS SPIN OFF: ZACK CAREY

HOLLYWOOD – Showgirls spin off to focus on Kyle MacLachlan in Zack Carey.

First Dale Cooper comes back in the new Twin Peaks. Then a new Dune is made. And now Kyle Maclachlan steps once more into the shoes of one of his most famous roles Zack Carey from Showgirls. We spoke with Kyle about the new film:

I see Paul Verhoeven and Joe Eszterhas every now and then. Restaurants and laundromats. That kind of thing. Every time we meet they talked about a Showgirls sequel. For them it felt like unfinished business, but they weren’t interested in Nomi. They wanted to do something with Zack. I didn’t take them very seriously but apparently Netflix shits money so it’s on.

What’s the story?

Story? Oh yeah. We left Zack in a state of some uncertainty. His treatment of Nomi sent him into a tail spin. He might have been an unscrupolous asshole, but he lost his job after she left and he realizes that he has lost his soul. So he goes into retreat and writes a bunch of poetry. Then he comes back to Las Vegas and finds that Crystal has become a hotel owner. He gets his old job back but this time Crystal makes him dance for her. It’s like a MeToo thing, but this time – and this is the twist that Joe and Paul are so good at – the man is the victim.

That’s erm…

I know.

Zack Carey will be released in 2019.

47 FILMS: 47. DUNE

In our continuing series of 47 films to see before you are murdered in your dreams we present Dune.

Blue Velvet disturbs and Elephant Man moves, but David Lynch’s Dune is by far his most entertaining film. Based on Frank Herbert’s epic novel, it tells the tale of House Atreides and their move to the desert planet of Arrakis, the only source of the hallucinogenic Spice. Don’t worry. This isn’t about turmeric or something. The Spice allows for the navigators to fold time and space and thus travel vast distances through space.

Paul Atreides – the Duke’s son – is being trained by his weird mom as well as Jean Luc Picard to take over from his father. The  dangers of complicated politics and particularly the threat of the rival Harkonnen house, a family that resembles a less fat and disgusting version of Donald Trump, surround the family and soon mother and son are fleeing into the desert as the family are attacked. Here as the Harkonnen take over the planet, Paul and his magic mum seek refuge with the Freemen. Sorry, I meant Fremen.

Of course, the film has flaws. I can’t think of any, but it has them. Perhaps the last half becomes lost as it does its best to take us through the messianic rise of Paul. But frankly the flaws are also in Herbert’s novel. Like Lord of the Rings, Dune is basically an okay-ish novel, full of mock medieval scrumptons and elevated by the worlds invented around it.

Lynch’s vision is startling and has moments of genuine beauty and ugliness. The cast are superb. The guy from Das Boot, Picard, MacLachlan and Sean Young are great. And then there’s Sting in his pants!  Sting. In. His. Pants.

TWIN PEAKS TO START SOON

HOLLYWOOD – Following six episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return fans are looking forward to it starting.

Twin Peaks: The Return has been back on TV screens for a few weeks now. And hopefully it is going to start soon. Kyle MacLachlan plays a Dale Cooper accidentally mixed with Rain man. His Dougie is one of those magically transformed characters – someone on twitter reminded me of super-powered Nadine in the original show – who test the limits of the world around him.

Of course, that world isn’t real. And the fact that we’re not in Twin Peaks itself for the most part means that the wild at heart and weird on top nature of everything isn’t contained in a township of quirk. Here Las Vegas and New York are just as weird as Twin Peaks. With his new budget, it’d be nice for David Lynch to take us to Paris or London, maybe Cairo as well. There’s no doubting the verve and ambition on display here. Lynch promised the new show to be an 18 hour art movie and that is basically what we are getting.

So far I’ve seen six episodes and here are my thoughts.  The darkness is there. Released from the constraints of network television, Lynch and Mark Frost make explicit the violence and brutality that always lurked in the original show and only came out with Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me. As with much that is on television today it is disturbing how much of that violence seems aimed at women. It ain’t mitigated by the humor mixed in with the brutality. The soundtrack to a multiple stabbing scene raised a giggle while I was gasping at the murder.

The drip feed return of old favourites is excruciatingly slow, but that slowness seems to be the point. Some fan favorites get one short scene or even a single shot in the case of the long-awaited Diane. This approach defies expectation, teases and frustrates in equal measure. But having endured Better Call Saul recently, I applaud the the freshness here, the refusal to retread. Meanwhile, we’re getting moments of genuine weirdness. We witness the death of a child in a way which was both tense, terrifying and ultimately devastating. The fact that Lynch maintained the strange acting style of hyper-normality made everything even more excruciating. How can you criticise people reacting to the sudden death of a child, because they’re not polished enough in their performances? Not actorly enough?

My guess is that the structure of the show will follow Fire Walk With Me and these episodes are in effect a prologue which will draw is ultimately back to the town. But by now Lynch and Frost have set out their stall. This is the way things are going to work. My guess is Twin Peaks is only now about ready to begin.

INVITATION TO LOVE GETS SPIN OFF SEASON

HOLLYWOOD – While we’re all waiting for the next Twin Peaks season, David Lynch today announced that he was also planning to write and direct a spin off season of Invitation to Love, the ‘show within a show’ soap opera featured in the cult series.

Twin Peaks is set to return in 2017, but news dropped today that Invitation to Love is also to be granted a stand alone season.

Speaking EXCLUSIVELY to the Studio Exec, David Lynch explained what the show will be about:

We loved doing the little inserts of Invitation to Love in the original Twin Peaks. It was always a fun way of commenting on the action of the actual show and it gave us a license to make the story of Twin Peaks quite ridiculous while always seeming strangely real. You see you had the soap opera that the characters were watching and it is just a weird thing. You never see people watching TV on TV and so getting them to do that made our show seem more real, though of course our plot was often as ridiculous as the fake soap opera.

But it is now going to return as a show in its own right?

That’s exactly right, Exec. You see I loved doing them but I always wrote far more for Invitation to Love than we could ever actually use. And so when Twin Peaks got cancelled I would keep on writing episodes of Invitation to Love. Some of them I converted and sold to other TV shows, Gray’s Anatomy bought a couple and the entire finale of Lost is just an Invitation to Love episode with all the characters’ names changed. But when we got the go ahead to start Twin Peaks again it seemed natural that I should do Invitation to Love as a companion piece. It had grown so big though, I knew I couldn’t bear to have the show just exist in snippets so me and Mark Frost decided we would make Invitation to Love as a stand alone series that we would film alongside Twin Peaks.

Lara Flynn Boyle and Kyle MacLachlan are both expected to give guest performances though the main cast has yet to be confirmed.  Sherilyn Fennalso said that she would have a role in the soap opera and also revealed that the plots of the two shows would intertwine. She told Studio Exec:

I think they’re going to be two fun rides. People will be debating the influence of the one show on the other for a very long time. And David being David things are bound to get very, very weird.

Invitation to Love will be shown in 2017.

TWIN PEAKS AND X-FILES TO MERGE

HOLLYWOOD – In a sensational decision Showtime and Fox have decided to merge the reboots of X-Files and Twin Peaks into one super show called Twin-Files: X Peaks.

Both X-Files and Twin Peaks had been announced for new seasons following a protracted hiatus for each. The decision was made shortly after midnight, the traditional time to make bad decisions. A spokesperson for Showtime spoke EXCLUSIVELY with the Studio Exec:

We’ve been thinking for a while why can’t we merge two shows in such a way as to create double the impact and these shows have large and committed fan bases who I feel will welcome the move. Plus many of these fans like both shows so they will be able to get their enjoyment in half the normal time which will leave them free for Role Playing Games and angry comment sections.

But how will you reconcile the different stories and themes?

Are they different? Really? In both shows, you have maverick FBI agents, so we’ll get Mulder (David Duchovny) and Skully (Gillian Anderson) and Cooper (Kyle MacLachlan). I mean Duchovny was in both shows so there’s a way in right there. In both shows, you have a paranormal element, be it UFOs or psychic visions. And in both shows you have a kind of kooky sense of humor which the guys from The Big Bang Theory are going to help us replicate. Also both shows were cancelled after they lost ratings and to some extent they lost their way.

Does the decision to merge the shows having anything to do with David Lynch dropping out of the project?

Absolutely, categorically yes. He left us with the scripts and he’ll be involved in some way, but he won’t be directing and we just thought without Lynch who is going to be watching? We got drunk after that and we were in the same cocktail bar as a load of Fox execs and they were bitching and moaning about Chris Carter, so we kind of began to put two and two together. We worked out that when it comes down to it, this isn’t about quality television or wonderful shows, or raping your memories, or a lack of originality, or beating dead horses, or a lack of orignality. No. It’s more about money. These two shows will be cheap to make and lots of people are going to tune in no matter what. So it’s a win-win.

Twin-Files: X Peaks will be broadcast in 2016.

DAVID LYNCH’S NEXT FILM: DUNE MESSIAH

HOLLYWOOD – After bowing out of the Showtime 2016 resurrection of Twin Peaks, David Lynch has confirmed that his next film will be the long-awaited Dune sequel: Dune Messiah.

In 1984, David Lynch’s original Dune was considered a commercial and critical failure but The Elephant Man director had always said he wished to return to Arrakis and film Frank Herbert’s second novel in the saga Dune Messiah. Lynch spoke EXCLUSIVELY with the Studio Exec:

It’s just one of those things that has been grinding at me for years. I was so attached to the original material that I read all of the Frank Herbert novels, even those towards the end when things really got ridiculous. For years I’ve resisted the idea of  doing sequels although I’ve returned sometimes to Twin Peaks. But with Dune it was different. If someone had given me the budget I would have gone tomorrow.

So what took so long?

The budget, as I said, was always going to be a factor. Filming in Arrakis is really expensive. There’s not just the logistic of having to deal with the Guild, but paying of the Fremen costs a lot as well. But we’ve managed to raise the money and Kyle Maclachlan has agreed to come on board and repeat his role as Paul – Maud’Dib – Atreides. So I’m really excited.

I know David, you seem really excited.

But?

But when we spoke about Twin Peaks you seemed really excited as well.

That was different.

How?

With Dune Messiah we will be shooting on Arrakis which, as I’ve said is an expensive, difficult and might I say dangerous location, but with Twin Peaks we were going to have to shoot in Canada. And I’m just not prepared to do that.

Dune Messiah will be released in 2016.

BRETT RATNER TO DIRECT TWIN PEAKS

HOLLYWOOD – No sooner had David Lynch tweeted he would not be directing the Showtime revival of Twin Peaks than his replacement, Rush Hour 2 director Brett Ratner, was immediately announced by the proud network.

The planning for the new Twin Peaks show is already in place with the scripts finished and casting almost complete, but protracted negotiations over budgeting saw an unhappy David Lynch leave the process, tweeting his farewell. Initial reaction was overwhelmingly negative with fans expressing widespread dismay, but that turned to joy when news leaked that Brett Ratner – director of Tower Heist and Hercules – would be stepping in.

Speaking EXCLUSIVELY with the Studio Exec, Ratner stated:

I have always been a huge fan of Twin Peaks. I have an encyclopedic knowledge of the show. When I was a kid I would dream of the show and I’d write stories about my favorite characters, especially J.R. and Sue Ellen.

What do you think you will do differently from the original?

The important thing is to bring out a balance between respecting what made the original series great, mainly the adultery, and what modern audiences want to see now: Ben Stiller and Kung Fu based comedies with motor mouth black comedians. I’m committed to getting rid of the off-beat element of the show – I mean all that Bobby coming back in the shower bit for instance didn’t work for me – in order to get to the core emotions of the characters.

Will Agent Cooper still play a prominent role?

My agent’s name is Carl. Uhm and yeah.

What about the rumors that Miley Cyrus has been cast?

Come on. We want to leave some surprises intact.

Well at least we can be sure of some damned fine coffee.

I don’t know what you’re talking about.

KYLE MACLACHLAN STILL UNDECIDED ON TWIN PEAKS

HOLLYWOOD – Actor Kyle MacLachlan – made famous by his portrayal of Agent Dale Cooper in Twin Peaks – is still undecided on whether or not he will return to the show.

‘The  thing is I’m just not sure I can fit it in,’ the Blue Velvet actor told Studio Exec this morning.

I have Paul Verhoeven phoning every day asking me if I’ll reprise my role as Zack Carey in Showgirls 2. Oliver Stone has been harassing me to play Ray Manzarek in his follow up to The Doors, After Jim. And the Flintstones franchise looks like it’s still going  to happen and I’d love to play Clifford Vandercave once more. It’s a role that I didn’t really perfect and the opportunity to take another swing at it would be great.

But surely the opportunity to work once more with David Lynch…

Who?

David Lynch.

Oh yes. David and I worked together a few times in the past. Dune was my first break and Blue Velvet was a lot of fun. I’m never sure why we didn’t do a sequel to that. Or The Hidden. That was nasty in a good way.

But I think all your fans really want to see you as Dale Cooper?

Who?

Dale Cooper. They want you to say Damned Fine Coffee. And wax poetic about the pie.

Really? They don’t want Clifford Vandercave or Zack Carey?

Well, now you mention it. It would be cool to see Zack Carey again.

You see? It’s a toughie!

Showgirls 2 will be released in 2016.

TWIN PEAKS NEW GENERATION ‘WILL APPEAL TO YOUTH’

HOLLYWOOD – Mark Frost and David Lynch’s cult TV show Twin Peaks is to return to television courtesy of Showtime and a re-imagining which will continue the story through the new younger generation.

David Lynch and co-creator Frost had already taken to Twitter to hint at a renewal of the show which ran for thirty episodes and a spin off movie, Fire Walk With Me, but the Dune director wanted to speak at length and EXCLUSIVELY to the Studio Exec:

I’ve been really into my Transcendental Meditation for ages now. And it has been satisfying, you sit there and become one with the universe more or less, but the downside of it is a. cramps and b. it gets really, really boring. So when Mark called me up and said he had some ideas for a new Twin Peaks I said, ‘let’s do this’.

What will the new show be like?

It’ll be the young kids. I don’t see how anyone can even remember who Kyle MacLachlan is anymore, so I want to go with Dale Cooper’s son, Rodney Cooper, played by Zac Efron. Rodney is called to the town when his dad goes missing and it turns out that the Son of Bob (Freddie Highmore), a mysterious serial killer might be responsible. Of course, the girl with the twig (Selena Gomez) roams the town weirdly as does Donna Hayward’s daughter Marcy (Ariana Grande). There’s going to be a lot more music in this version. I’ve been watching a lot of Glee and I think that will add something to the show, though Mark is a bit resistant.

Will this change of direction effect other aspects of the show?

Yes. Instead of Damn Fine Coffee, Rodney Cooper will say things like hashtag DFC.

Twin Peaks: The New Generation will be broadcast early in the Spring, 2015.
