HOLLYWOOD – Auteur extraordinaire Paul Thomas Anderson has signed on to direct Sharknado 7.
Paul Thomas Anderson to direct the latest in the Sharknado series, provisionally entitled Sharknado 7. The news comes the day after Ben Wheatley announced he would direct The Meg 2. However, The Master director insisted this had nothing to do with his decision. Speaking the the Studio Exec EXCLUSIVELY, PTA had this to say:
I’m a huge fan of the series. I watched them from the very beginning. Sharknado influenced There Will Be Blood. Just look at the mise en scene. I think it’s a very underrated series of films. Once they came to me and asked me would I like to be a part of number seven, I said yes before they’d even finished the sentence.
How will you approach the project?
It reminds me of having to prep for inherent Vice. It felt like I was doing something out of my comfort zone. And this is the same kind of challenge. The first thing I want to do is make sure we’re using practical effects. I love the CGI from the earlier films but I think practical effects will give my version an indelible stamp of the old PTA touch. Jonny Greenwood is working on the score as we speak. Partly because I like using his soundtracks while I’m editing, rather than asking him to fit his music around the film. Joaquin Phoenix is on board and Daniel Day Lewis, Amy Adams and Jessica Chastain. I’m excited to work with her because I’ve not done so before.
Why do you think these series about sharks are getting prestige directors?
I can only talk for myself, but who doesn’t like sharks? I mean Jaws was a fundamental film for me. And Twister as well. So once I saw Sharknado for the first time I felt very depressed. How am I going to live up to that? Now it’s time to put up or shut up.
Sharknado 7 is out in 2022.
