LONDON – When a film begins like Borgman with a scene of a priest – fresh from saying mass – loading a shotgun and going into the woods to chase some tramp like figure from his underground den, you know you’re in for a treat.
Dutch artist and director Alex van Warmerdam has created a bleak apocalyptic fable full of the dark diabolical humor and some brilliant images. Jan Bijvoet plays Borgman, a charismatic weirdo who inveigles his way into the house of upper middle class couple Richard and Marina, corrupting, converting and destroying them one by one. The film loses some of its originality in its last act as it follows a logical conclusion rather than revealing another surprising turn. But the sulfuric fun has already been had and the ranks of the damned have been swollen.
