HOLLYWOOD – Jar Jar Binks actor Ahmed Best refuses to return the costume of his iconic prequel character.
Star of The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones, Ahmed Best is in trouble because of his close affection for the role that defined his career: Jar Jar Binks. A native of New York, Ahmed has been frequently spotted wearing his full costume around and about Manhattan – the bars, the nightclubs, restaurants, the deli, clothes stores and the park. However, Disney – the new owners of the Star Wars franchise – have decided to step in. Kathleen Kennedy told the Studio Exec:
We ahve communicated with Mr. Best on several occasions that he is in fact in breach of copyright. We appreciate that he has a bond of affection with the character, but his wearing of the costume in certain situations is causing many who love the prequels distress. It’s our duty to protect the identity of our brand.
Kennedy was referring specifically to a fracas inside the Times Square M&M store as well as a number of online selfies that Best posted which were deemed ‘inappropriate’.
Ahmed however is adamant that jar Jar Binks belongs in part to him.
I created that goddamned character. For better or worse. I’ve had to live with the Gungan and now, I’m about 70% Gungan. What can I do? I can’t not be myself. I eat with my long extendable tongue, I step in all manner of ‘doodoo’ and I speak like I’ve been hit on the head with a hammer. At least when I’m wearing the costume people get it.
