JAKARTA – A 4DX version of Gareth Evans’ martial arts action movie The Raid 2 has been blamed for the death of sixty three customers when it opened in Jakarta last week.
The enhanced viewing experience known as 4DX seeks to give an immersive event feel to the viewing of big screen blockbusters, via such innovations as juddering seats, puffs of air and perfume and flashing lights. During the midnight viewing of The Raid 2, however, cinema-goers could be heard screaming from the street and the emergency services were called. The theater manager was placed under the arrest and a spokesperson for the Indonesian Security Force said:
This is not the first time we have had trouble with this new thrill ride bastardization of the multiplexes A fourteen year old boy was drowned during the 4DX showing of Titanic last yet – but it is by far the most severe. Other than the 63 fatalities, another 150 approximately were grievously wounded, with seven still in critical condition, and no one escaped without some kind of lesion.
A spokesperson for the 4DX technology, which was developed in South Korea, however, pooh-poohed the criticism.
This is health and safety fascism gone crazy. People know what they’re getting. They pay for an extreme experience and that is what we deliver. And I hear the people who ‘died’ were kind of old anyway.
What does the 4DX experience of The Raid 2 involve?
I don’t want to spoil the film, but this is a high adrenalin martial arts action movie. So there’s running and jumping and fighting and to give you the feeling of being in the middle of the action, the seat judders quite a lot. Then there’s a character with two claw hammers as his weapons of choice. So every time he hits someone with a hammer, a hammer comes out of the seat in front of you and smashes you in the face.
A real hammer?
Of course a real hammer. Then for bullet hits a small spike comes out of the back of your chair and stabs you. When there’s a a limb broken, the arm rest will oblige or the something underneath will grab your ankle and give it a brisk snap.
I see. Don’t you think this is a bit too dangerous?
No. We put up notices all around the foyer, people with heart conditions, hemophiliacs, epileptics, all welcome! It adds to the frisson of risk.
The Raid 2 in 4DX is coming to a theater near you.
